LIKE A BAT OUT OF HELL? - Working Title
Idea of a review show that will look back on things that have happened in the past month.Audience/channel
BBC 2 or Channel 4 programme at 9pm or later after watershed.
18-45 age range, pretty wide ranging in content
Influences
So I have looked at a few shows I to take inspiration and ideas from, firstly Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe, Charlie Brooker acclaimed writer and comedian sits down to talk satirically about the weeks news. This programme goes out on BBC 2 and he also does a year end wipe in which he reviews the year.
Here is a full episode of his weekly wipe:
In much the way this show does I would like my review to be very satirical in its approach not taking things seriously making fun of some of the most ridiculous stories in the world. Making fun of the news channels that report such news as a dog riding a skateboard. There are quite a few shows out there that do this kind of thing whether it be a week or yearly review.
I have seen a few examples namely 'Last Week tonight with John Oliver' on HBO, 'The Daily Show' on Comedy Central, 'Russell Howard's Good News' on BBC Three which is not quite as effective and not exactly the route I want to go down but still has elements that I can borrow.
Last Week tonight with John Oliver is a show which stands out, and it is helped by the fact it is on HBO which is an American Network which is quite open to controversial programming.
John Oliver as a former contributor to Comedy Centrals The Daily Show and attributes much of his style to the way that show was done by then host Jon Stewart. Oliver even took over presenting duties for a summer whilst Stewart was away directing a film.
Lastly for the moment I should also site 'Have I got News for you' BBC as an inspiration, because they do the satirical review show, but in the form of a panel show. On the face of it it is a show that is quite high brow and only for people who follow politics closely, but I can say from personally watching it as a non politics follower I find it hilarious.
In this clip they perfectly exemplify how daft and ridiculous some news out there is discussing peoples favourite numbers.
Format and presenters
I would like to use the dual presenter behind a desk format with 2 people who have good chemistry and dry humour that can work especially well with the both of them together. So I would be like a mock up news desk.
For my show it is really important for my presenters to carry the show through. There many opportunities for presenters, but what I would like is some kind of competitiveness or friendly dislike for one another much like these 2 below who I found on a show called 'The Crowd Goes Wild' on the Prime channel in New Zealand. This dual presenter daily sports review show is on every weeknight at 7pm and is one of the most well known shows around in the country. The Presenters have a clear chemistry, but also some as I said above friendly dislike due to their different sporting backgrounds. Below are a couple clips of the banter between the 2 presenters.
